Online activation cannot connect

In most environments, online activation works without additional network configuration.

Use this guide if online activation fails, times out, or reports a network or certificate error.

The computer performing the activation must be able to connect to the Materialise End-User Portal. This applies when activating:

  • a local license on the computer running the software; or
  • a floating license on the Floating License Server.

Connecting a workstation to a Floating License Server uses a different network connection. See Workstation cannot connect to the Floating License Server.

Step 1: Check network access

Ask your IT team to allow outbound connections to the following addresses:

Type Address
IPv4 185.146.152.64/27
IPv6 2a07:4f80:20:200::/56

Step 2: Check HTTPS access

Online activation uses HTTPS over TCP port 443.

Ask your IT team to confirm that:

  • outbound HTTPS connections over TCP port 443 are allowed;
  • connections to *.flexnetoperations.eu and the required IP addresses are allowed;
  • no proxy, VPN, firewall, filtering, or SSL inspection is interfering with the connection.

Depending on your organization's security configuration, your IT or Security team may need to configure an exception for SSL inspection.

Step 3: Try online activation again

Repeat the online activation process.

If activation succeeds, no further action is required.

Step 4: Check certificate errors

Complete this step only if activation reports a PKIX, trusted-certificate, or certificate-chain error.

Ask your IT team to confirm that the computer's trusted root certificates are up to date.

If your IT policy allows you to update them directly:

  1. Open PowerShell as Administrator.

Run:

Certutil -f -generateSSTFromWU root_store.sst

Run:

Import-Certificate -CertStoreLocation Cert:\LocalMachine\Root -FilePath .\root_store.sst

  1. Try online activation again.

These commands update the computer's trusted root certificate store. Check with your IT team before running them on a managed computer or server.

Alternative: activate offline

If the required online connection cannot be enabled, use the offline activation option in the relevant activation guide:
